An Inconvenient Wheeze
Many researchers believe conditions related to global warming have led to a rise in respiratory diseases. Self-reported prevalence of asthma, for example, increased 75 percent from 1980 to 1994 in adults and children and 160 percent in preschool-aged kids. Pollen counts are rising and becoming more potent. And global warming may be altering the whole dynamic of the allergy seasons. The end result: more wheezing and reaching for the inhaler.

McDonnell's fierce lobbying led New Jersey to enact in August 2003 "Maggie's Law" - the nation's first law recognizing drowsy driving as a major offense. Read more about drowsy driving initiatives in June's issue of ADVANCE for Managers of Respiratory Care.
